What Is?

The product configurator facilitates rapid order configuration by non-technical people in Sales, Production, Engineering and Estimating.

The product configurator module provides a rules-based configurator that will primarily help companies efficiently process products that are manufactured-to-order, assembled-to-order , engineered-to-order or sold in many configurations. It can also help reduce configuration errors, while reducing the involvement of experts in routine transactions.

However should a need arise in a company to have some form of configuration mechanism to handle in-house transactions such as travel itinerary, or any other rules based mechanism to control a company, the system is highly adaptable to cater for other means not related to production.

It allows a non-technical person to create a viable customized product for a sales order, estimate or quote. A configuration must be defined, specifying the components/operations which can be used to create a product. Once a configuration has been defined, the Product Configuration Wizard can be used to create an item from that configuration. A test configuration can also be run during the addition of the various sections to build up the configurator. The configuration can be set up to create a stocked parent part, non-stocked parent or both, along with default selection criteria comments or user defined comments. Once the parent has been defined, a job, bill of materials structure and routing or a combination of both can be created to manufacture the parent. If a stocked or non-stocked parent has been created using the configurator, it can be used in the same way as other stocked or non-stocked items. SYSPRO Solution

The Product Configurator system provides a rules-based configurator that will primarily help companies efficiently process products that are manufactured-to-order, assembled-to-order, engineered-to-order, or sold in many configurations.

Pre-defined user configurations are set up to control the configuration process and eliminate invalid product criteria, options and options dependencies. The configuration can be set up to create a stocked parent part, non-stocked parent or both, along with default selection criteria comments or user defined comments. Once the parent has been defined, non-technical people can use a Wizard to create a viable customized product for a bill of material, job, sales order, estimate, quote or a combination of these. You can also retain libraries of commonly configured items.

Process Flow

A configuration consists of static information, selection criteria, selection criteria validation (invalid selection criteria), options, components and operations, calculations and dependencies.

An engineer/technical person needs to enter the static information and decide when the configuration will be able to be used or under development. Next they will define all the questions and answers that need to be asked to assist the non technical person to sell or configure the product. Selection criteria can be defined as Mandatory or optional selections allowing the user to skip through selections if the answer is not applicable. They also need to link selection criteria to prevent any illogical combinations being chosen through selection criteria validation (invalid selection criteria) e.g. If you are selling a red bicycle then you should not be able to choose a blue paint.

Enter options which are groups of similar components or operations. These groups can have dependencies either to selected selection criteria or to selected components. These can be multiple selections of dependancies for one option or one component. Define the components either stocked or non-stocked and operations required to configure the configuration. These components can be set to optional (the component can be selected or skipped) mandatory (the component will be automatically selected) or a range (the component has to be selected and a value enter based on the minimum or maximum quantity defined against the component) selection type.

Calculations can be defined against each component to work out a calculated value based on either a selection criteria value, or based on a previous component quantity or value.

The Product Configurator cannot be run standalone and integrates with the following modules:
